Lynn Geesaman

Whether the landscape is "natural" or sculpted, like the gardens of Versailles, Lynn Geesaman brings her own sense of control over her environment. She is a student of gardens, their history and development. She refers to the garden itself as architecture and monument. Her work is quietly seductive, offering a velvety texture that plays soft focus against sharp detail. Geesaman was born in Cleveland Ohio in 1938 and she received a B.A. from Wellesley College. She continued her studies at the Lightworks Photographic workshops and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in the late 1970's and early 1980's. She has received many awards including the Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship in 1984, 1986, and 1990. The Jerome Foundation recognized her in 1989 with a travel and study grant. Her work is in the permanent collections of many museums including: The Walker Art Center, The Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, The Toledo Museum of Art and the Iowa Museum of Art. Her first book of black & white images, Poetics of Place was released in the fall of 1998.
